Our highly interdisciplinary group is always interested in new PhD students, post-docs and clinical fellows. Our work has clinical, empirical, analytical and computational dimensions, and we welcome applicants from diverse areas of engineering, health, natural, physical, quantitative/computational and social sciences as long as you are committed to learning about and interacting with other disciplines.

January 2023 – PhD studentship opportunities

Research area: Machine learning, data science and mathematical modelling for global health and global environmental health


We welcome applications for funded 3.5 PhD studentships to start in October 2023 (earlier start may be feasible in special circumstances). This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious students to conduct interdisciplinary research on global health and global environmental health with emphasis on the applications of cutting-edge methods in statistics, machine learning and other areas of data science and mathematical modelling.

The PhD research will use multiple traditional and emerging data and apply novel methods to characterise health and its social and environmental determinants, at scales from local to global.


Applicants should have, or expect to receive, a first or upper second-class degree or equivalent in mathematics/applied mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, quantitative neuroscience or related discipline, and have exceptional quantitative/computational preparation. Studentships will include tuition fees for UK nationals and a minimum stipend of £18,062 per annum.
